4 Tips for Self-Care

How can you show up for anyone else if you aren’t taking care of yourself!

We’ve heard it said before, “You can’t pour from an empty cup!” Is your cup empty? If your cup needs filled back up ask your self these questions:

  1. What puts a smile on my face?
  2. Am I putting into my body the right kind of fuel?
  3. Do I move my body for 30 min. each day?
  4. How is my mood and energy level?

Healthy Habit #1: Daily Gratitude Practice

Put a Smile on Your Face

I have found that a big part of keeping my cup full is my attitude! Now, I know that we so easily blame circumstances or others on our bad attitudes. But the hard truth is this: ONLY YOU CAN CONTROL YOUR ATTITUDE! We can wish life were different, we can complain about others or about our own life situations, however…it’s how we respond to others and to life’s situations that really makes the difference.

A GOOD ATTITUDE STARTS WITH GRATITUDE!

In the past 2 years I’ve started a healthy habit of keeping a gratitude journal! Each morning when I wake up, I start my coffee and while it’s brewing, I open my journal and list 5 things that I’m grateful for! Voila! It’s that easy. Start your day off with positive thoughts that make you smile! It really works! To read more about gratitude click here.

All you need is a spiral notebook or journal! You simply think about your day (or the day before) and you jot down 5 things.

Here is what I am grateful for today…

  1. phone call with Jenny
  2. weekend fun
  3. Cool morning and warm afternoons
  4. football games (Browns looked pretty good yesterday despite the loss)
  5. Family Time

See how easy that is! It’s so simple! It’s almost too simple. But the difference it will make in your attitude is huge!

Healthy Habit #2: Hydrate!

Bottom Line – You will feel better, have more energy, and be in a better mood when you are hydrated! So chuga-luga!!! Get that water in!

Drink 1/2 your body weight in water.

Healthy Habit #4: Fuel Your Body

The fact is that what you put into your body will determine how you feel! If you put the wrong kind of fuel into your vehicle, I’m guessing the vehicle wouldn’t run right or wouldn’t run at all. Your body is the same.

When you look at food as fuel, it makes it easier to choose the right foods for your body. Some things to consider when finding the right fuel for your body:

  • Everyone’s body responds differently to food.
  • What types of food give you energy, allow you to focus better, and keep you feeling full?
  • How much fuel does your body need?

When you have the right mindset about what goes into your body, you will find it easier to make good food choices throughout the day.

When you become consistent with fueling your body with the right stuff you will feel better, look better, and have more energy to show up for those who count on you!

Healthy Habit #4: Move Your Body 30 minutes each day

That’s it! Just move your body for 30 min. each day! It doesn’t have to be some crazy workout. Just move! Some days you might just stretch for 30 min. Some days you might get an extra walk in. Other days you might click play on your favorite workout video or dance it out in your basement. It really doesn’t matter! Just move!

Sitting is the new smoking.

4 for MORE

In April 2021, I became a healthy living coach with Beach Body. I have been teaching elementary school for nearly 20 years and have taken time off to research, write, and teach graduate level courses. With working from home, I needed accountability for staying healthy. This was my reason for taking this step.

I have learned so much which led me to creating these 4 healthy habits and sharing them with others. If you’d like more information on how you can either join me as a member of my fit club or as a fellow coach, click here.

You cannot pour from an empty cup! The only person who can keep that cup filled is you!
